Why should you go on Erasmus to Salzburg? This city has the necessary requirements to be a perfect Erasmus destination. Two of these requirements are its location, in the centre of Europe, and relaxed and affordable study life.
Ready to discover what Salzburg has to offer? Here we explain everything you need to know about the city: the cost of living, parties, student atmosphere, cheap accommodation, answers to frequently asked questions... Let's get started!
Austria is considered an expensive country to live in. However, in Salzburg you can find a cheaper place in the country to go on Erasmus. The average cost of living can be around €700-800 including accommodation, food, and transportation.
Regarding accommodation in Salzburg, note that shared rooms with other students are common. This option is usually around €350. Instead, if what you’re looking for is a private room, the price is normally around €600 per month. There are also studio apartments for those who want to rent a flat individually. In these cases the price starts from €650 and up.
We recommend that you take into account the characteristics of the accommodations, because in many cases the prices that appear are per person and not per room. Besides, you should take into account the area where you’re staying to look for affordable options if that’s what you are looking for.
In general, in Salzburg you can get everywhere on foot. With good weather the most common thing is to ride a bicycle everywhere, although for longer journeys and visiting some places of interest there’s public transport. The most used is the trolleybus or the conventional bus, which cost €2.60 for the single ticket and €5.70 for the twenty-four hour voucher. Furthermore, another very important means of transportation is the funicular that goes up to the fortress (FestungsBahn). The price for an adult is €14.50 which includes going back down. You have the option of walking part of it, but when you reach different points you need the funicular to get to the top.
Salzburg is the fourth largest city in Austria, so it’s full of life and students. In fact, there’s a wide variety of bars and pubs to enjoy. Near the old town is the Gillis OneRoomBar, a very nice place to have a drink with your friends and try the cocktail menu they offer. Another place very close to the centre is Havana - Cocktail Bar which, apart from cocktails, has a food and drink menu at affordable prices within Salzburg.
If what you’re looking for is a place to dance and listen to live music, the City Beast is a good option. It has three rooms with different styles of music to choose from. Also, note that the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) offers discounts and free tickets to these venues, and also organises many activities for students in the city.
If you prefer quiet plans, a walk through the historic centre is a great option. The most beautiful streets to visit are Linzergasse and Getreidegasse. They have classic facades, shops with wrought iron signs, galleries, and pleasant interior patios. The city is divided by the Salzach river, and its riverside is a very popular walk by both locals and visitors. From there you have great views of all the monuments of the city, including the fortress.
At Christmas, the city becomes even livelier. You can't miss the famous Christkindlmarkt! This market is located in the Cathedral Square and in the Residence Square. You can enjoy its decoration, live music, traditions, typical food and the well-known mulled wine (Glühwein).
Salzburg is a fairy tale city. It’s considered the city of music because it’s the birthplace of Mozart. In fact, a site of special interest is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, on the Getreidegasse street. This was where the great composer was born and raised.
The city has a large historic centre crowned by the great fortress of Hohensalzburg (Festung Hohensalzburg). From it, there are museums and magnificent views of the city and the Alps. The palace of Mirabell (Schloss Mirabell) is a mandatory stop in Salzburg. You can walk through its ornamental gardens and enjoy the classical concerts offered inside. Finally, another essential place is the Cathedral of Salzburg (Dom zu Salzburg), which costs €5 to enter.
As for the gastronomy of Salzburg, a dessert that you can’t leave without trying is the Mozartkugel, a pistachio marzipan that was created in honour of Mozart! Another strong point of Austrian gastronomy is the Viennese schnitzel (Wiener Schmitzel), known throughout Austria for being the traditional dish par excellence. Furthermore, in the city you’ll be able to try the Knödel, a type of meatballs made from a mixture of bread and potatoes that usually accompany soups and meat dishes, and the Käsekrainer, a sausage stuffed with Emmental cheese and smoked in apple wood that is sold with bread, mustard and sliced at any street stall.
