Despite being a small city, a lot of cultures have passed through it, leaving remains of its art, architecture and culture. Are you wondering why you should do your Erasmus in Segovia? This city attracts hundreds of young people every year to study at its universities, which is why this city has a lively student atmosphere. In addition, you will enjoy spectacular landscapes and amazing and impressive monuments. From this city, you can visit other nearby cities like Salamanca, Ávila or even Madrid. If these reasons have not yet convinced you, there are many others to decide on Segovia as your Erasmus destination, and we are going to show you now.
The cost of living in Segovia, as well as most Spanish cities, is quite affordable. The average budget for a student is usually around €650 per month, which includes renting a room in a shared apartment and living and leisure expenses.
Renting a room in a shared flat is usually the preferred alternative for young internationals who move to live in Segovia for a while, for two main reasons. Firstly, you meet people, like your roommates and their friends, and also, share the experience with them. And secondly, you will be able to enjoy greater independence, since there are fewer rules than in other types of accommodation such as student residences. As a reference, the price of a spare room in shared apartments starts at €150 and up and can go up to €450 per month. However, the average cost is €250 per month.
In short, the monthly budget depends on the expenses that each person has and on the way they decide to manage their budget, but we could say that Segovia is a good city in terms of quality/price ratio.
In this Spanish city, you will find a very dynamic and varied environment, since students of different nationalities come together. In addition, they organise many activities, excursions, meetings to go out for a drink, parties… The latter is one of the things most requested by any student who is going to do their Erasmus, so you don't have to worry about this aspect.
Regarding nightlife, it will depend on what you want to do. If you want to have a quiet night walking around the city, any corner is perfect. On the other hand, if you want a night with atmosphere you can go out for a drink on “Calle Infanta Isabel”, but everybody knows it as “Calle de los Bares” (Bars Street), which, as the name suggests, is full of places that get crowded on weekends, or to nightclubs, such as Canavans-Theatre and Sabbat, which are some favourites nightclubs by students.
Segovia is a World Heritage city with unique monuments, a Jewish quarter, manor houses and dreamy panoramic views. The most famous place in this city is the Aqueduct, located in Plaza Azoguejo. Nearby is the Paseo del Salón, a path of houses with spectacular facades and characteristic decoration. From this walk, you will enjoy a panoramic view of part of the green belt of the city and the Alcazar. This castle is like a fairy tale crowned by a tower, from which you will be able to observe the impressive views of the Vera Cruz Church and the Parral Monastery.
Segovia’s gastronomy has a great reputation throughout the country, as it is considered the centre of what is known as the Castilian roast. Segovian inns are well-known throughout Spain. Among the most typical we find: “judiones de La Granja” (a large white bean variety), “cochinillo de Segovia” (suckling pig), “roast lamb” (a variety of lamb), “trucha a la Segovia” (trout with a base of potatoes with garlic, Serrano ham, bacon and chorizo) and “Ponche Segoviano” (a layered cake soaked in syrup with layers of yolk cream).
