Amsterdam-Zuid

This district is one of the most chosen by students who move to the city, since the campus of the VU itself is located there. You can find many options to stay and it’s full of shops, restaurants, and cafés frequented by young people.

Jordaan

The Jordaan neighbourhood is a very popular alternative among students. Its streets are full of alternative fashion stores, pubs where you can have a drink with your friends, and restaurants. It’s a more central neighbourhood but it takes 20 minutes by bike to VU.

De Pijp

It’s a bohemian neighbourhood with a young atmosphere. It has narrow streets full of Middle Eastern restaurants, traditional pubs and cafés with terraces. There are emblematic sites of the city located here, such as the Heineken brewery museum and the famous park, Vondelpark. To get to the VU you need to take tram number 24 and it will take around 20 minutes.

Watergraafsmeer

This neighbourhood extends around the Oosterpark, a large green area with modern sculptures and a pond with grey herons. It’s surrounded by museums and the atmosphere is calm and pleasant. Although it’s further away from the VU, it’s very close to the centre, making it a very popular option among students.

Student residences near the VU

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers accommodation for up to one year in the city. The price of a room ranges from €380 to €1,200, but the usual thing is to pay around €700 per month.

There’s also a wide variety of private residences, but the price is usually higher. The price for a room starts at €650 and up. They are close to the universities, so you’ll save time getting to class.
