Where is the University of Oulu located?

It has two campuses that are in different parts of the city of Finland. These are:

Campus Linnanmaa

This is the main campus of the institution. It is located in the Linnanmaa district, north of central Oulu. It is true that it is quite far from the central area, but you can connect the two areas in about 20 minutes, both by bicycle and by bus.

The Linnanmaa Campus is home to the following faculties and schools:

• Education and Psychology
• Humanities
• Information Technology and Electrical Engineering
• Sciences
• Technology
• Oulu Business School

The Oulu University of Applied Sciences is also based on this campus.

Campus Kontinkangas (Kontinkangas Welfare Campus)

As its name indicates, this campus is located in the Kontinkangas district, which is located southeast of the centre of Oulu. From this area you can reach it either by bicycle (in about 10 minutes) or by bus (in less than 15 minutes).

Classes from the faculties of:

• Medicine
• Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine

It should be noted that the Kontinkangas Campus is also part of the Oulu University Hospital.

Best neighbourhoods to live in near the UniOulu

We suggest that you look for accommodation in the following areas of the city:

Linnanmaa

This neighbourhood is ideal for those who are going to study in the main campus of the institution, which is located right here. In fact, it is an area mostly occupied by the institution, so it is usually full of students. However, there are not a large number of entertainment venues available, although the city centre can be reached in a short time. Keep in mind that the cost of rent here is usually more affordable than in central Oulu neighbourhoods.

Raksila

Raksila is located next to the centre of Oulu, so it has good access to the leisure and interest sites most frequented by students every year. Furthermore, from here you can reach the Kontinkangas Campus, both by bicycle and on city buses. It has some green areas to enjoy, as well as several places to play sports.

Oulu City Center (Keskusta)

The centre of Oulu is the most popular alternative to live by students who want to be close to the largest number of leisure and restaurant venues in the city. From here you can easily access the institution's two campuses, both by public transport and by bicycle.

Student residences near the University of Oulu

You will find two types of residences. On the one hand, there are the private student halls of residence, which usually offer shared or single rooms. In these, there is usually a bathroom inside each room, to be used only by those who live in it. The other spaces, such as the kitchen and living room, are usually shared by several other young people who live in the building.

With regards to the public halls of residence, they are offered by the foundation called PSOAS. Accommodation here is usually individual rooms with the rest of the shared facilities. There are few units that are furnished, so it is advisable that you request your place as soon as possible to be able to access them and not have to incur extra expenses when entering there.

Erasmus at the University of Oulu

We give you some tips so you can make the most of your experience:

• At the beginning of each semester, the institution organises an “Orientation Day” in which it offers a lot of useful information for newly arrived exchange students. We encourage you to participate in it, since it will not only allow you to integrate into the university community more easily, but it will also allow you to meet other international students and make friends.
• It is true that most of the young exchange students talk to each other and have classes in English. However, for you to delve deeper into the local culture, we suggest you take advantage of the free Finnish courses offered by the University. I'm sure the Finns are excited to hear you say “Kiitos” when thanking someone or something or “Saisinko yhden oluen?” when ordering a beer!
