Bergen is a charming city located on the southwest coast of Norway, surrounded by majestic mountains and picturesque fjords. It’s the second largest city in Norway, and its historic centre, known as Bryggen, is famous for its brightly coloured wooden houses surrounding the harbour. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is ideal for strolling and discovering cosy stores, cafes and restaurants. Moreover, the city is home to many museums, art galleries and theatres that offer opportunities to explore the Norwegian culture - an ideal setting for a fun Erasmus experience!
The most common type of apartments for rent in Bergen are those with several rooms, so the cost of rent is divided among all the people living there. The average cost of an apartment with three rooms is usually 1200 € per month, although you usually have to add the cost of services.
The studio apartments are not very common among students, since the cost is usually too high for the monthly budget. However, if you want to rent an entire apartment for yourself, you’ll probably find some options with good locations.
Renting a room in a shared apartment is usually the most sought after option for international students. It’s generally the most economical alternative, and living with other young people makes the experience much more fun from the moment you arrive.
On average, estimate that a room costs between 500 - 600 € per month. Keep in mind that you have to check if the cost of utilities such as electricity, water, heating, etc., is already included in the price or if you have to add it at the end of each month. This detail can make the price vary a lot, and we don't want any surprises!
In this section you’ll find out which are some of the most chosen neighbourhoods by students to live in during their exchange:
This is the city centre of Bergen, where many of the leisure and cultural sites to visit, as well as the central train station, are located. In addition, many of the buildings of the University of Bergen are located in the Sydnes neighbourhood, which is adjacent to Sentrum, so you’ll be able to reach them easily. However, keep in mind that being centrally located, the rent of the apartments may be a little higher in Sentrum than in surrounding neighbourhoods.
This neighbourhood is located southeast of the city centre of Bergen, with good public transport connections to that area. It’s part of the suburban area of the city, so the cost of accommodation is usually a bit cheaper. Near Kronstad are some of the faculties of the University of Bergen, so many students often choose this neighbourhood to live in.
The Vågen area is located next to Sentrum, to the north. It has many of the most interesting and picturesque sites to visit in the city, such as the Bergen Fortress, the colourful Bryggen area, and the famous harbour. Because of this, it’s one of the liveliest areas of Bergen, so it’s great for students who want a fun atmosphere.
This university has different faculties located in various parts of the city. Most of its buildings are spread around the Nygårdshøyden area of central Bergen, but it’s also present in surrounding neighbourhoods, such as Fløen, Møhlenpris and Årstad. You're sure to find your ideal accommodation near the faculty you're going to if you search with enough time!
There are several private student residences in the Norwegian city, located in different parts of the city (although all of them are located around the city centre of Bergen). Take a close look at what’s included in each of them, as you may have to bring your own cooking utensils and even bedding. For its part, the University of Bergen offers residences through the SAMMEN, and only for those who are going to stay at least one semester.
