In this article we tell you everything you need to know about the institution and some tips so you can find the best student accommodation near the Jaume I University.
You can find a wide variety of accommodation that’s economical and close to the university campus. One of the students' favourite options is to opt for rooms in shared apartments. Castellón de la Plana is small, so the cost of living is lower than in other cities in Spain. In any case, the UJI is very well connected and public transport is cheap, so the location of your accommodation should not pose a big problem.
The UJI has a single campus in Castellón de la Plana, north of the Valencian Community.
The Campus of Riu Sec brings together all the buildings and facilities of the UJI in a modern and accessible environment, and is surrounded by spacious green areas. It’s found three kilometres away from the centre of the city, in the Avenida de Vicent Sos Baynat. It has three accesses on this road, and a fourth on Carretera de Borriol.
Among the faculties and schools that are based on this campus are:
It also houses a doctoral school, a research area, a sports area with an indoor pool, and its own university residence.
Are you going to study at the UJI? These are the best areas where you can live close to its campus:
If what you want is to live near the university to avoid having to take a bus every day, then your best option is the west side. Although it’s somewhat far from the centre, it’s quite new and you can find very good prices if you rent an apartment with other students. It’s surrounded by shopping centres, supermarkets, and everything you need to live comfortably.
Living in the centre of the capital of Castellón is also an excellent choice. You’ll have all the leisure and entertainment at your fingertips! If you’re not convinced, perhaps its charming cobblestone streets and its tascas with delicious tapas will finish the job. Furthermore, the public transport is very good and the university is well connected, so you can get to your classes without problems. Even by bike!
In the north area of the city you’ll find the cheapest accommodation. It’s a good choice too, even locals recommend it. It’s a family area that’s also well connected and in which you’ll find everything you need. If you love sports, you’ll love to know that the area is close to the football stadium. Maybe you'll find a game to go see!
The Jaume I University offers its students accommodation in its own residence, called Campus. It has 250 small apartments for students and also for some teachers. Keep in mind that those who prefer to live in a more fun environment and with other students their age, opt for the private residences of the city.
The UJI offers more than 130 mobility agreements with universities from different countries. To help international students to settle in, there are integration days at the beginning of each semester (September and January). These activities help you integrate better into university life. We also encourage you to participate in the Programa Mentor (Mentor Program). You can get a local companion to guide you through your experience!
In Castellón, there are two official languages: Spanish and Valencian. The institutional language is Valencian, but Spanish is more frequently used in classes. Students can choose which of the two to communicate with. To facilitate the stay of exchange students, the university offers two Spanish courses, one intensive and one semi-intensive. And great news is that there’s a free alternative! With the Centro de Autoaprendizaje de Lenguas (CAL - Language Self-Learning Centre) you can independently learn or perfect several languages, including, of course, Spanish. Local people speak little English, so these courses are a good idea.
