Cost of living in Malmö, Sweden

The cost of living in Sweden is quite high if we compare it with other countries like Spain, since the salaries of Swedes are also higher. In Malmö, you will have to start from a base of around €500, which is approximately what it costs to rent a room in a shared student apartment. There are other more expensive options, such as student residences, which cost an average of €800 per month. However, remember that it always depends on the size of the room and the services of the residence.

Shopping expenses are also usually high, and you also have to think about the activities you are going to do during your stay, such as nights out or leisure, which we are going to talk about in the next point.

Student life, Erasmus parties and leisure in Malmö

Malmö has several bars and restaurants where you can go after school for dinner or a drink with your friends. Furthermore, in Malmö you can find various clubs to party which are set in very different and curious ways. For example, Babel is a nightclub that looks like a church, crowned with a cross when you enter, and in Kulturbolaget (KB for locals) and Plan B rock is the protagonist.

As in many European cities, Malmö also has the ESN (Erasmus Student Network). It is an association of students (local and international) who organise activities to meet people, to explore the city, to make original plans and, of course, to party!

But not everything in Malmö is partying or going to bars. You can also do more relaxed plans, but just as fun. In November and December, you can go to the Christmas market and try the local food (we tell you about some dishes you have to try in the next section). In addition, about the 13th of December, you can celebrate Saint Lucia, with processions and various events that will allow you to get to know another part of Swedish culture.

Culture and gastronomy in Malmö, Sweden

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the Swedish culture in Malmö is by exploring its historical centre. This neighbourhood of cobblestone streets and buildings with architecture from different periods is home to a large number of important historical sites to visit. One of them, and the best known, is the Malmö castle (Malmöhus Slott). It is a fortress built of red bricks surrounded by a moat and parks with green areas where you can enjoy the outdoors. There are also other important buildings, such as the St. Peter's Church (Sankt Petri kyrka) or the City Council (Malmö Rådhus), both located in the city centre.

Another aspect to highlight of Malmö is that it has several museums. Some of them are very interesting! One of our favourites is the Disgusting Food Museum, where you can even try some of the dishes on display!

Swedish gastronomy is based heavily on techniques that the Vikings already used. That is why we find many pickled and/or fermented dishes. The sill(pickled herring) is a staple food at the national holidays of Easter, Midsummer and Christmas. Other examples of typical Swedish foods are isterband(smoked pork sausages served with dill potato cream),"rotmos och fläsk" (mashed tubers and pork sausages) and "ärtsoppa" (Swedish yellow pea soup, usually accompanied by pancakes). And of course, we cannot forget the most typical Swedish dish: Swedish meatballs!

In this article it is necessary to name the most controversial dish in the country: the "surströmming(fermented herring). This dish has a very characteristic flavour and smell. It is usually described by locals as a delicacy, while foreigners who try it define it as something that tastes rotten. Do you dare to try it?
