Stare Miasto (Old Town)

The Old Town is one of the best student neighbourhoods in Wroclaw, especially for those who want to be in the most historic and busiest area. It’s highly chosen by students, even though it’s also very touristy and rentals tend to be more expensive than in surrounding neighbourhoods.

In the old town there are some buildings of the University of Wroclaw, which house faculties such as Philology, Historical and Pedagogical Sciences, and Law, Administration and Economics.

It’s one of the neighbourhoods that has more eateries options. It has restaurants offering both local and international cuisine, as well as a large number of cafes. As for nightlife, Wroclaw's Old Town is home to the largest number of nightclubs in the city and there’s also a variety of bars with different environments.

As expected, Stare Miasto gathers the largest number of cultural and historical sites to visit. Take the opportunity to visit some sites and monuments such as:

  • The Market Square (Wrocławski Rynek) with the Old Municipality (Ratusz)
  • The famous gnomes of Wroclaw, there are more than 600 of them throughout the city!
  • Museums of various themes, such as art (Muzeum Sztuki Mieszczańskiej), architecture (Muzeum Architektury), history (Muzeum Farmacji), or the one of the University of Wroclaw (Muzeum Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego)

As for parks and open-air spaces, the most notable is the Juliusz Słowacki Park (Juliusz Słowacki Park), with monuments and memorials. You can also take walks along the banks of the Oder River. Likewise, from this neighbourhood you can reach in a short time, on foot or by tram, the Słodowa Island (Wyspa Słodowa). This is a popular spot on the Oder River where students frequently gather and events are held throughout the year.

Being in the centre of everything, from Stare Miasto you can reach everywhere on foot or by bicycle. In fact, many of its streets are pedestrian or semi-pedestrian. It also has a very good tram and bus connection with the rest of the city.

Nadodrze

Nadodrze’s located across the Oder River from the historic centre of Wrocław. In the past, it was an industrial and rather neglected neighbourhood, but in recent years it has become the city's artistic district. This gives it a very lively atmosphere.

This neighbourhood houses the buildings of the University of Wroclaw with the Faculties of Physics and Astronomy and Earth Sciences and Environmental Management, and the faculties in Stare Miasto can also be reached in a short time.

Nadodrze stands out for its artistic offer, with art galleries, shops selling modern Polish designs, and street art projects decorating murals.

As far as outdoor leisure sites are concerned, the most notable is the Staszic Park (Park im. Stanisława Staszica) with its paths and fountains. The City park (Wzgórze Słowiańskie) is another space to enjoy, although smaller. Furthermore, from Nadodrze you can also easily reach the busy Słodowa Island (Wyspa Słodowa), very frequented by students.

This district is connected to the rest of Wroclaw mainly by bus and tram lines. There are also some bus lines and stations of shared bicycles called NextBike. And here’s one of the train stations of the city, Wroclaw Nadodrze.

Plac Grunwaldzki

This is another one of the best student neighbourhoods in Wrocław. It has a very lively atmosphere, mainly because it's home to two important institutions:

  • Here you’ll find the Grundwaldzki Campus of the University of Wroclaw, so it’s ideal for those who are going to study there.
  • All buildings in the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (Politechnika Wrocławska) are in this neighbourhood or just a few minutes walk away.
  • The Grunwald Campus of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences is here, and the Biskupin Campus is about 20 minutes by tram.

Plac Grunwaldzki has a very lively social scene, in fact, the neighbourhood's atmosphere revolves around students. It has a lot of affordable bars, restaurants, and cafes, and there are also some nightclubs and events organized throughout the year.

The Pasaż Grunwaldzki mall stands out as a focal point for shopping and a place to relax.

The cultural visits in this neighbourhood of Wroclaw are not as varied as in the Old Town, but there are still some interesting places to visit. Most of them are museums that belong to universities, such as the Polytechnic University Museum (Muzeum Politechniki Wrocławskiej) or the Oder Museum (Muzeum Odry - Fundacja Otwartego Muzeum Techniki).

The outdoor spaces that stand out are: walks along the Oder River, which gives a serene atmosphere to the neighbourhood. In addition, very close to Plac Grunwaldzki there’s the great Szczytnicki park, with forests, a Japanese garden, and plenty of places to enjoy nature.

The public transport connection of Plac Grunwaldzki is based mainly on tram lines, with some buses also available. In addition, there are several bicycle-sharing service stations called NextBike available in the neighbourhood.

Przedmieście Oławskie

This neighbourhood had a negative reputation for many years. Today, it’s in full transformation, with many cultural and urban renewal projects. The atmosphere is very young and multicultural, with artistic and gastronomic events. However, keep in mind that, as this is a changing neighbourhood, it has very beautiful areas and others that are still being recovered.

It’s a central neighbourhood, but it’s a little less touristy than Stare Miasto or Plac Grunwaldzki. It’s east of Stare Miasto, and you can easily reach everything the downtown area has to offer.

Another interesting fact is that the cost of rent in Przedmieście Oławskie is still low, ideal for students who want something affordable but close to the centre.

Among the cultural sites to visit in this neighbourhood, the highlights are: National Museum (Muzeum Narodowe we Wrocławiu) with its art exhibits. It also has several art galleries and a performing arts centre.

In Przedmieście Oławskie you can enjoy outdoor spaces in parks such as Juliusz Słowacki (Park Juliusza Słowackiego), shared with the historic centre. However, the most beautiful part is often the walk along the banks of the Oder River, enjoying its tranquility and views.
