The University of Zagreb, "SveuÄiliÅ”te u Zagrebu" in Croatian, is one of the oldest and largest universities in Southeast Europe. Located in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, it offers a wide range of academic programs and has a rich history dating back to 1669. As an Erasmus student, you will have the opportunity to experience the vibrant academic and cultural environment of this prestigious institution, immersing yourself in the local culture and interacting with students from different parts of the world.
We provide you with all the most important information about the university's locations and the different convenient neighbourhoods to live in, so you can choose the ideal one for you according to the faculty you are attending.
The UNIZG buildings are spread across different parts of the Croatian capital:
Located east of the city's old town, in the Borongaj neighbourhood, it is the only campus of the institution that brings together several buildings in one complex. It was inaugurated in 2007 and is still under development, so more faculties are likely to move to its complex over the years. Currently, the faculties located there are:
In this neighbourhood, which translates to "Lower Town," there are several buildings that house UNIZG faculties. Some of the most important ones are:
This campus is located in the Å alata neighbourhood, northeast of Zagreb's old town. It houses the School of Medicine, including some clinics.
We tell you which are some of the best neighbourhoods close to the main centres of the university:
Maksimir is very close to the central buildings of the University of Zagreb, including the Boronaj Campus. Depending on your faculty or campus, you can reach your classes on foot or by tram or bus from here. In the area, you will find cafes, bars, restaurants, and student-oriented shops, creating a lively and social atmosphere. Additionally, the famous Maksimir Park is located here, a large green area where young people often go to relax or exercise.
Several faculties are located in this central neighbourhood, in the Donji Grad Campus. The neighbourhood offers a lively urban environment with numerous services, such as shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions.
Gornji Grad, also known as the "Upper Town," is where the mediaeval core of Zagreb is located, offering a picturesque living environment. From here, you can easily reach any part of the city on foot or by tram, including the Campus of Medicine and other faculties of UNIZG that are nearby.
The university has a few halls of residence for local and international students, although finding a place in them is often quite difficult. In addition, there isn't much private student residences available in Zagreb. For this reason, young people often choose rooms in private shared flats to live in, so that they can share the experience with other students and make it much more fun!
Keep these details in mind during your mobility:
As its name suggests, this institution is based in the Croatian capital, Zagreb. However, it does not have a single campus; instead, its faculties are distributed across different campuses and buildings in the city.
This depends on the faculty you will be studying at. For example, if you are going to the Campus in Donji Grad, you can live in the neighbourhood of the same name, or in Maksimir if you are going to the Borongaj Campus. Keep in mind that many young people choose to live in the lively area of Gornji Grad-MedveÅ”Äak, as it has good connections to the rest of the city.
Being located in different parts of the city, near the institution, you will find the most interesting places for young people, such as nightlife venues or parks where you can relax, like Maksimir Park.
The cost of accommodation in Zagreb is quite affordable, especially compared to other European destinations. Estimate that you should have a minimum of around ā¬250 per month for a room in a privately shared apartment.
We inform you that one of the best apps you can download is Erasmus Play. Do you want to meet other students who will be at UNIZG at the same time as you? In our app, you can talk to them, make friends, and also find people to share an apartment with during your stay.
