In this article we gather everything you need to know about the institution, so you can find the ideal student accommodation near the University of Hamburg. Willkommen!
In Hamburg, finding flats or rooms for students can be a competitive task, but if you look in advance, and with the help of our platform, you’ll be able to find the ideal accommodation for you. We recommend that you first find the location of the faculty in which you’re going to study, so that you can choose the most convenient area.
It has a main campus and three other smaller campuses, which are located relatively close to the first. Thanks to this, students are guaranteed a convenient accessibility to all facilities.
The campus of Von-Melle-Park, in the Rotherbaum district, is the main campus of the UHH. It includes most faculties and buildings, including the following:
In addition to its faculties and departments, it also contains some museums and collections.
It has schools and centres dedicated to research projects, and a few libraries and study spaces scattered throughout its facilities. It also houses several dining areas (mensas) and canteens that offer students varied menus.
You cannot miss the green areas that surround the campus and, if you like animals, you’ll surely love to know that they have a duck pond. It's a great place to sit and get some fresh air!
In the same neighbourhood as the main one, but in the Bundesstraße area, is another of the campuses of the University of Hamburg. This one houses the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences.
In Bahrenfeld, a little further west, the UHH locates facilities dedicated to the studies of Physics and other nanosciences.
The last of the campuses, which is located further south, is KleinFlottbek. It’s the home for facilities of the Biology branches.
The best areas or neighbourhoods to live near the University of Hamburg are those that surround its facilities. Although, if you want to find cheaper accommodations, it’s preferable to choose somewhere further away from the centre. In general, the most popular options among students are:
Rotherbaum is an excellent choice for students who appreciate the proximity to the university. The main campus is located in this area, which makes the district very lively. It’s close to the city centre and offers a high quality of life. This is combined with nice shops and entertainment venues, as well as pubs and restaurants that offer options that adapt to all tastes.
Eimsbüttel is also a very popular district among students or those who prefer a calmer environment. It’s close to the UHH and you can get to the city centre in 10-15 minutes by subway, or even by bike. It also has a good offer of food stores, bars, restaurants, and green areas.
Barmbek is another great option for students looking for a combination of affordability, comfort and good quality of life. It’s in the Altona district and has good services, a cosy atmosphere and efficient transport connections. It’s an area with cheaper accommodation, but it’s still close and well connected to the university, the city centre and leisure and entertainment venues.
The accommodation service (Studierendenwerk Hamburg) makes available a certain number of accommodations to international students of the University of Hamburg each semester. You must bear in mind that the offer is limited. If you want to opt for a student residence for your stay, we recommend that you also look for private options, like those we offer on our platform.
