The University of Havana (UH - La Universidad de La Habana), one of the most prestigious and oldest institutions in Latin America, was founded in 1728 and currently welcomes thousands of Cuban and international students every year. Renowned for its academic excellence and its historical role in the cultural and scientific development of the country, it has educated important figures such as Fidel Castro, Nicolás Guillén, and Fernando Ortiz. In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know about the institution so that you can easily find student accommodation near the University of Havana that suits your needs and budget.
| Available accommodation | Total | Average price |
|---|---|---|
| Private room La Habana | 657 | €709 |

| Entire place La Habana | 0 |
First, we’ll tell you where the institution is located, so that you can then consider the most convenient neighbourhoods to live near it.
The main campus of this institution is located in the Vedado neighbourhood. Its headquarters are located on Colina Universitaria, on San Lázaro Street, an iconic location inaugurated in 1902 that stands out for its monumental staircase and neoclassical architecture.
From there, other campuses and faculties are spread across different areas of the city. For example, the Faculty of Economics is located in another area of Vedado, very close to the main campus, while the Faculty of Tourism is also close to the main campus, although on the other side of Avenida de los Presidentes.
These are some of the most convenient neighbourhoods to live near the institution:
As the neighbourhood where the main campus is located, it’s definitely the best area if you’re looking for proximity to the University of Havana. In fact, it’s home to a large number of students, so it has a very lively atmosphere. It has a variety of bars and restaurants, as well as an active nightlife and various entertainment venues (including the famous Yara cinema). It’s also very close to the city centre!
Located right between Old Havana and Vedado, Central Havana is an ideal area both for being close to the University of Havana and for being in a historic and cultural area. It’s a neighbourhood that allows you to fully immerse yourself in local urban life, and it usually offers a good balance between price and location when it comes to accommodation.
Nuevo Vedado is very close to Vedado. It has a more residential and modern atmosphere, with slightly taller buildings and iconic spaces such as the Plaza de la Revolución. It’s a convenient location from which to travel to the University of Havana, but you may need transport to get to other livelier places.
In Havana, the availability of university residences is limited and, in most cases, they’re managed directly by the universities themselves. This means that they are usually publicly managed rather than privately managed. However, not all institutions offer this type of accommodation, so it's important to check whether the university where you’re going to study offers this option among its alternatives.
Some details to bear in mind if you’re going to study here for a while:
Most students live in the Vedado neighbourhood, due to its proximity to the central campus and its student atmosphere. Others opt for nearby areas such as Nuevo Vedado, Centro Habana or even Miramar, depending on their budget and preferences.
Near the University of Havana, you’ll find the iconic Coppelia ice cream parlour, the Yara cinema, and the lively La Rampa area, full of cafés and bookshops. There’s also the Malecón habanero, ideal for strolling, and several parks and cultural spaces that are part of student life.
It varies depending on the type of accommodation you choose. For example, public university residences can cost around USD $50 per month, although availability is very limited and facilities are very basic. Rooms in family homes usually start at USD $200 and up, while entire flats cost around USD $500 per month (and there are not many of these available).
The University of Havana is located in Vedado and is easily accessible by city buses that run along streets such as San Lázaro or Infanta. You can also get there by taxi or car share from anywhere in the city. If you’re staying nearby, walking is a convenient and quick option.
