Apartment description

Escape to a quieter way of life on São Miguel Island in the Azores. This peaceful mountain apartment at Quinta São Roque is a comfortable longer-term base for digital nomads, remote workers, couples, and anyone looking to enjoy the island during the calmer winter season.

Winter in the Azores is still mild, with temperatures generally between 12 and 18°C, although humidity is high and there are some rainy days. On those days, you can always enjoy the hot springs or visit a tea plantation. Surfers enjoy the stronger winter waves on relatively uncrowded beaches, while the ocean remains swimmable all year round. I swim throughout the year; the sea is coolest in February, at around 16–17°C.

The island has a growing digital-nomad community and a relatively large expat community.

We are located in São Roque, where the apartment offers a relaxing setting surrounded by the green landscapes and fresh Atlantic air that make São Miguel so special. Ponta Delgada, the Azores’ main city, is just a few minutes away. A car is recommended for exploring the island, but there is also a bus stop right next to our house. As we often travel around the island ourselves, we are happy to go shopping together or take you on a hike if you would like to join us.

Spend your free time exploring hiking trails, dramatic coastlines, volcanic landscapes, thermal pools, local cafés, and the natural beauty of the Azores. São Miguel is also a great place to learn to surf, with accessible lessons and beautiful beaches.

Quinta São Roque has three rental apartments in total. This creates a nice balance: you have your own independent space and privacy, but there may also be other guests around to share a conversation, exchange island tips, or enjoy a relaxed barbecue together.

My family and I also live on site, so we are always nearby if you need help, have questions about the island, or simply feel like having a chat. We are happy to help guests make the most of their stay on São Miguel.

Outside, you can enjoy the shared garden, relax around the natural swimming pond, or take time for yourself on the yoga decks. It is a peaceful environment for working, resting, reading, swimming, practising yoga, and reconnecting with nature. We also have a small library and dozens of board games available for guests.

For remote work, the apartment has a reliable internet connection with speeds of up to 200 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload, making it suitable for video calls, online work, streaming, and everyday digital-nomad life.

This is an excellent choice for someone who wants more than just accommodation: a peaceful home base, an authentic island experience, and time to enjoy São Miguel at a slower pace.
