Veliko Tarnovo is a Bulgarian city steeped in history and culture. It’s known for its impressive historical heritage, highlighted by the Tsarevets fortress and its cobbled streets. Moreover, Veliko Tarnovo is situated in a mountainous region, offering breathtaking scenery. You’re going to be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings while living your exchange!
Regarding the language, it’s true that Bulgarian is the main language. However, in academic and tourist environments, many people speak English. This facilitates communication for international students.
This type of housing is very sought after by students, but there’s usually not much availability. For this reason, we recommend that you start your search as soon as possible if this is your preferred option!
As for the type of student rental apartments that you can find, there are both flats to share with other students, which have several rooms, and studio apartments, which are going to be fully for you. You have to pay attention, mainly, to two things: whether the cost of rent includes utility costs and what are the features of the apartment itself and the building it’s part of.
Usually, a room in a shared apartment is one of the most chosen options to live the Erasmus experience. As for the types of rooms you can find, you’ll be able to choose between single rooms or shared rooms between two people. It’s true that the latter are usually cheaper, but you have to keep in mind that sometimes you can’t choose who you’re going to share it with. However, in some cases you can choose your roommate if you already know someone beforehand (for this, we suggest you download the Erasmus Play app, in which you’ll find students who are going to be in Veliko Tarnovo at the same time as you).
Keep in mind that all rooms are usually furnished with the basics for students, including bed, bedding, desk, chair and closet.
These are some of the most chosen neighbourhoods by students to live during their stay in the city:
The city centre is the liveliest area of this Bulgarian city, including dining venues and cultural events. Moreover, it’s an ideal neighbourhood to consider as some of the campuses of the University of Veliko Tarnovo are located here. Just remember that living in the central neighbourhoods can lead to higher housing prices, compared to surrounding areas.
Varusha is located in the historical part of the city. Indeed, living there means being just minutes away from important sites, such as the Tsarevets fortress and the Trapezitsa fortress, as well as the Mother Bulgaria Monument and some parks. In addition, in Varusha you’re going to find some of the most crowded taverns, restaurants and bars.
This residential area is located to the west of the city centre. It’s chosen, above all, because it’s home to one of the University's campuses. It’s a quiet neighbourhood with several parks and green areas to enjoy, and has good public transport links to the centre, so you’ll have easy access to the liveliest areas of the city.
This institution has several campuses located in different areas of the city. The main campus is located in the district of Sveta Gora, very close to the city centre. In this neighbourhood there’s also another of its campuses, while the furthest one is in Kolyo Ficheto neighbourhood, to the west.
The type of student hall that you will find in this Bulgarian city corresponds to university residences, which means they are managed by the University of Veliko Tarnovo. Note that, for exchange students, the places offered are usually single rooms in one of the blocks located on the main campus grounds. However, the number of such places is usually less than the demand, so many students choose to rent rooms in private shared apartments.
