The Technical University of Hamburg (in German Technische Universität Hamburg – TUHH) is the second largest higher education institution in the city of Hamburg, with almost 8,000 students. Since 1978, it has been a beacon of innovation, academics, and research excellence in Germany. Despite being one of the youngest universities, it’s also one of the most successful in the country. Besides, it’s located in the heart of one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe, perfect for young students! In this article you’ll find what you need to know about the TUHH so that, if you’re considering moving to Hamburg, you find ideal accommodation near the institution. Welcome! Or, rather, willkommen!

In Hamburg there are different accommodation options that can be affordable for students. From rooms in shared apartments (WG) to entire apartments, Hamburg has solutions for all lifestyles. Because of this variety and because the city is large, first you must know in which area your campus is located, and thus choose the accommodation option that best suits you.
It concentrates its facilities on a single main campus that’s south of the city, about a 20-minute drive from the centre.
The main campus of TUHH is in the Harburg area, where the barracks of Schwarzenberg were located in the past. It consists of a total of fifteen buildings that are located between the streets Eissendorfer Straße and Am Schwarzenberg-Campus. This university has different types of divisions: education programs are organised into schools of study, but research is divided into fields. We give details about all of this below:
Schools:
Research fields:
The street Denickestraße divides the campus into a northern and southern half. The southern part is well integrated with the park that surrounds it, and also has three ponds. The northern part is almost completely paved. The university cafeteria is located on this street and in front of it is the library. The campus store and a Haspa service point are also located in the library building.
We recommend the most convenient areas and neighbourhoods to live in near the University:
Harburg is the neighbourhood where the campus is located, so accommodation here would be ideal if you’re attending TUHH. It’s the cultural and economic centre of southern Hamburg. It has a mix of academic and commercial life, with good public transport connections and many services, shops, restaurants, and bars.
Eißendorf is a residential neighbourhood with many accommodation options west of Harburg, so it’s also close to the university. It’s well connected to the city centre and has different supermarket and service options.
It’s southwest of the university and it’s quieter and more residential. It has green areas and parks for outdoor activities. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a more relaxed and family atmosphere.
TUHH offers a limited number of rooms in the Studierendenwerk student residences, which is the owner of public residences in Germany. The universities themselves don’t have accommodation on campus. As there are not many spaces, you can choose to apply for private residences.
