Let’s start with a short introduction of the city. The Swedish town of Linköping has a charming old town, with cobblestone streets, stores and cozy cafes. The Linköping Cathedral, an important historical site, and the picturesque Stångån River add a special touch to the cityscape.
The city is home to Linköping University, known for its academic excellence and focus on research. Moreover, it’s also recognized for being a technology and innovation centre, which allows students to be immersed in a cutting-edge business and research environment.
There’s a wide variety of student apartments for rent in this Swedish city. They can be either studio or one-bedroom flats (for one person or a couple), apartments with more rooms to share among several students or even small houses with gardens. Keep in mind that, sometimes, landlords have as a requirement that the duration of the stay is at least one year, so you have to look carefully to see if you meet that.
The most common thing to do in Sweden is to rent a room that’s part of a shared flat, since this allows you to pay a lower cost of rent per month. Also, living in this type of accommodation you’ll live with students from other parts of the world, which allows you to learn about other cultures.
We recommend you download the Erasmus Play app if you want to meet people who are going to be in the Swedish city at the same time as you, and who can share accommodation with you. That way, you can rent an apartment with several rooms between all of you and split the costs, each one paying for one room.
These are some of the best neighbourhoods in which you can look for student housing in the Swedish city:
The centre of Linköping is one of the most chosen neighbourhoods by students, as it’s the liveliest of the city and has good connection to the university campuses. However, because of this, the cost of rent is usually high. For example, we estimate that a two-bedroom apartment ranges from €930 and up, without including some utility costs, such as electricity.
Vimanshäll is located southeast of the city centre. It’s a residential area that doesn’t have much to visit in itself, but it’s close to several green areas (such as the Bergas Aktivitetspark) and interesting sites (including the tourist lookout Majelden utkiksplats). Although you can reach the city centre in about 10 minutes by bus, the rental cost is usually cheaper than in the downtown area.
This neighbourhood is located west of the city centre, approximately 15 minutes by public transport. It’s an area that welcomes a large number of students every year, and has several restaurants, shops and green areas to enjoy during your free time.
Two of this institution's campuses are located in the city of Linköping. On one side is the University Hospital Campus, south of the city centre. To live near it you can consider neighbourhoods such as Innerstaden, Garnisonen and Ramshäll. On the other hand there’s Campus Valla, west of the city centre and in the area called Valla. You can consider that area and Ryd to live nearby.
In Linköping there isn’t a wide variety of student residences to choose from. However, Linköping University does offer some places in its student houses, but they usually can’t meet the demand for accommodation by international students. Because of this, the type of housing most students choose is rooms in private shared apartments.
