Student flats and spare rooms near the Iuav

The set of islands that make up Venice, connected by the famous canals, offer several options and accommodation locations, as well as different prices depending on the area. To find student apartments and rooms near the University, it’s important to first know the location of the facilities.

Where’s the Iuav University located?

The different buildings of the University are scattered throughout the historic centre of Venice. Below we mention, in more detail, each area and the facilities frequented by students that they house.

Santa Croce

The Tolentini building, in the area of Santa Croce, is the main building of the university. It consists mainly of management or administrative offices, with the exception of the Iuav Library, a recurring visit for study sessions.

San Polo

  • The Palazzo Badoer, in the San Polo neighbourhood, houses the Department of History of Architecture and the Doctoral School.
  • Campo della Lana houses administrative offices and the office of International Services, which you’ll probably visit on more than one occasion.

Dorsoduro

  • South of Dorsoduro we have Cotonificio, one of the most frequented university buildings as it’s the home of the Archivio Progetti, the ArTec archive on techniques and materials for architecture and industrial design, and a series of classrooms for classes.
  • The buildings Magazzino 6 and 7 are headquarters of classes and other educational activities such as workshops.
  • In Terese there are also classrooms and teachers' offices.

Mestre

  • In Via Torino, Mestre (part of continental Venice), you find laboratories of Construction Sciences (LabSCo) and Technical and Environmental Physics (FisTec).

Best neighbourhoods to live in near the Università Iuav di Venezia

Now that we know the location of the classes, offices, and other places frequently visited by university students, we’re going to recommend the best neighbourhoods and areas to live near the University.

Dorsoduro

Given that here are the classrooms and teachers' offices, it may be the most convenient area to look for accommodation. It’s popular among students for its good atmosphere and the number of bars and restaurants. Furthermore, prices here may be lower than in more touristy neighbourhoods.

San Polo

San Polo is another good option, which also borders Dorsoduro, so you’ll be close to the facilities that are located in both areas. Life here develops around the bridge and the Rialto market, and has other points of interest like the International Art Gallery Ca' Pesaro or the Basilica Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.

San Marco

On the other side of the Grand Canal is the tourist neighbourhood of San Marco. Although it usually costs more to stay here, if you can afford it, it’s a very attractive option. It’s well connected, and full of historical and cultural attractions.

Student residences near the IUAV University of Venice

The University doesn’t offer its own accommodation to its students. However, it collaborates with different organisations to help them access university residences in the surrounding area. Even so, the most common thing in Venice is to opt for private accommodation, generally shared apartments.

Erasmus at the IUAV University of Venice

  • The degree programs and courses in English and the student community from different countries that it receives each year, make the Iuav an international university.
  • Fortunately for those who don't speak Italian (yet), you can select subjects taught in English.
  • Of course, you’ll have to comply with certain language requirements, depending on which courses or subjects you choose. If your classes are taught in Italian, you must have at least a B1 in this language. On the other hand, if you apply to subjects in English, you’ll need a level B2 or higher.
  • If you want to improve your Italian, the Iuav recommends the courses of the Ca' Foscari School for International Education. They offer different levels (CEFR A1 to C2) throughout the academic year, and a special intensive program in summer specially designed for international students.
  • Thanks to organisations like ESN Venezia, you can access an interesting program of activities and events that make it possible to integrate into life in the city, and meet potential new friends.
  • We know that getting to a new city is difficult, but don't worry! For exchange students there’s the Buddy Students Programme, in which they assign an Iuav classmate who helps them in their new academic experience in Venice.
