Where is the University of Amsterdam located?

It has different campuses in different parts of the city:

City Centre Campus

This is the main campus of the UvA and is located in the old city centre of Amsterdam. Most of its buildings are located in the De Wallen and Burgwallen Nieuwe Zijde neighbourhoods, near the Rokin and Nieuwmarkt metro stations.

Science Park Campus

This campus is located on the eastern edge of the city and houses the Faculty of Science. It is a very large complex that has classrooms, research institutes, residences and sports centres. It can be reached in about 20 minutes by public transport from Amsterdam Central train station.

Roeterseiland Campus

This campus is located east of the city centre, between the Roeterseiland and Weesperbuurt neighbourhoods in Plantage. It houses several faculties, including some departments of:

  • Economics and Business
  • Humanities

Academic Medical Centre (AMC)

This campus is located in the southeast part of the city, about 30 minutes by transport from Amsterdam Central train station. It is the Academic Medical Centre, a joint entity of the UvA and VU University Amsterdam.

Best neighbourhoods to live in near the UvA

Here are some of the best neighbourhoods to live in as a student, according to the campus you are going to:

Watergraafsmeer, Oosterparkbuurt and Transvaalbuurt (Amsterdam-Oost)

These lively neighbourhoods in the east of Amsterdam (Amsterdam-Oost) are chosen by numerous students every year, due to their proximity to the UvA Science Park Campus. Thanks to this, you will find affordable cafés, restaurants and bars in this area, as well as interesting places to visit and parks to walk in. In addition, in Oosterparkbuurt you will also be close to the Roeterseiland Campus.

De Wallen, Burgwallen Nieuwe Zijde, Grachtengordel, Leidseplein and Jordaan

These are the most central neighbourhoods in the Dutch city and from all of them, you have good access to the UvA City Centre Campus, both on foot and by bike, tram and metro. They are usually full of students and tourists, so the atmosphere is very lively every day of the week, with a great offer of food and leisure. In addition, living among the canals of Amsterdam will give your experience a special touch.

Amstelkwartier and Rivierenbuurt

These two neighbourhoods in the south of Amsterdam are convenient if you're going to the Academic Medical Centre (AMC). They're halfway between that campus and the centre of Amsterdam and have easy public transport connections to both, so you'll be able to get everywhere easily.

Student residences near the UvA

The institution itself doesn't have its residences, but you will find a variety of private university residences where you can search for accommodation for your exchange. Each one has different details, so you need to compare to choose the one that has the details you're looking for and the best location according to your campus. The cost of residences generally ranges between €300 and €900 per month, depending on the type of room and what's included in that price.
