Where is the University of Iceland located?

The institution has around 30 buildings spread across different areas of the city. The most important locations are:

Main University Campus - Háskólasvæðið

This is the largest complex of the institution and is located in the centre of Reykjavík, between the districts of Miðborg and Vesturbær, and near Lake Tjörnin. Some of the most important buildings of the institution are located here, including:

• Main building (Aðalbygging)

• Natural Sciences Building (Askja): houses the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Earth Sciences, and the Institute of Biology.

• HideVeröld, House of Vigdís: here, classes for the Faculty of Languages and Cultures are held.

• Nýi Garður: houses the School of Humanities.

• Lögberg: the Faculty of Law is located here.

• VR-I, VR-II, and VR-III: house faculties such as Industrial Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Other UI buildings

Some buildings that are outside the main campus are:

• Læknagarður: houses the Faculty of Medicine and is located next to the University Hospital. It is in the eastern part of Miðborg.

• Setberg - Hús kennslunnar: the "House of Teaching." It is very close to Lake Tjörnin.

• Stakkahlíð / Háteigsvegur: located in the Hlíðar neighbourhood, it houses the School of Education.

Best neighbourhoods to live in near UI

The following are the best neighbourhoods you can consider:

Vesturbær

Vesturbær is a popular residential neighbourhood located near the city centre and the university. It offers a mix of residential streets, green spaces, and amenities. It has a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere, with easy access to the Main Campus and nearby recreational areas such as the waterfront and parks.

Miðborg (Reykjavík Centre)

Living in the city centre, known as Miðborg, puts you close to various university buildings and offers a lively urban environment. You will have easy access to the main campus, libraries, cafes, restaurants, shops, cultural attractions, and public transport. However, keep in mind that living in the city centre can be more expensive compared to other areas.

Hlíðar

This neighbourhood is located within a short distance of the Main University Campus of the University of Iceland, as well as the School of Education and the Faculty of Medicine. For this reason, it is an ideal place for students. It also has numerous cafes, shops, restaurants, bars, and other businesses targeted towards young people. Hlíðar is close to recreational spaces and parks, such as Hljómskálagarðurinn, which offers green areas to relax and engage in outdoor activities.

Student residences near the UI

In the city of Reykjavík, there is not a wide variety of university residences available as such, but you will have the possibility to rent a shared room in places like hostels. However, these rooms are usually shared and can accommodate up to six students, so it may not be the best option for a long stay.

On the other hand, the University of Iceland has some places in student residences, although they are very limited and tend to fill up quickly. You can apply for a place in the residence in case you are lucky enough to receive one, but we suggest that you start looking for private accommodation while waiting.
