Ulm is a university city located in southern Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Despite being relatively small, it has a young and dynamic environment due to the number of German and international students attending the University of Ulm (Universität Ulm) every year. In fact, demand for student accommodation in Ulm is usually high, especially at the beginning of the semester, so it's advisable to search in advance.
Thinking about renting a student apartment in this city? In Ulm, student apartments for rent are usually shared (WG), since renting a studio apartment is considerably more expensive —and less affordable for a student budget. The most common option is shared apartments with two to four bedrooms, where each student rents their own room and shares the kitchen, bathroom, and living room.
Some flats may be semi-furnished or unfurnished, so it's important to confirm this before renting.
As for amenities, private apartments typically do not offer access to common facilities such as laundry facilities or study rooms, which are found in many university residences. As an added feature, some newer or more modern buildings may include access to bicycle racks, storage rooms, or green areas.
Would you rather rent a student room? The most common option is to find single rooms. That is to say, shared rooms are not very common. In addition, they can be part of both private shared flats (called “WG”) or student residences.
The rooms can be furnished or semi-furnished, but they usually have at least what’s necessary to move in, such as a bed, desk, wardrobe, shelves and even bedding.
Some details to keep in mind are: whether the rental price includes utility costs (water, electricity, heating, etc.), the minimum and maximum duration of the contract, and the amount of the security deposit requested.
These are some of the neighbourhoods with the most student accommodation available in this German city:
Living in this neighbourhood is ideal for those who want to be in the centre of everything. It has the largest number of restaurants, bars, cafes, bookstores, and cultural venues in the city. Although rents tend to be somewhat higher than in surrounding neighbourhoods, students often choose this area because of the convenience and its lively atmosphere. In addition, it's very well connected to the university and the rest of the city (and other nearby cities) with bus, tram, and train lines.
Söflingen is an ideal neighbourhood for those looking for a quiet but well-connected environment with the centre of Ulm and the university. It's a residential area with a more peaceful and safe atmosphere, and offers a variety of cafes and green spaces for spending free time. Rent prices are usually more affordable than in the centre, and it’s well connected by bus and tram lines.
This neighbourhood is calmer than the previous ones, but it's convenient especially for those who want to be near the Ulm University campus. In fact, thanks to its proximity to the institution, Eselsberg hosts a large number of student residences, making the vibe of the neighbourhood young and lively. It also has green spaces to enjoy and good connections (both to the university and to the centre of Ulm) with buses and trams.
The campus of this institution is located north of the centre of Ulm, in the area of Oberberghof. The closest neighbourhood to live is Eselsberg, but from others like Söflingen, Lehr and the city centre there’s very good public transport connection.
If you want to rent a student residence in Ulm, there are two different options:
On the one hand there are the private student residences, which, although not as common, provide a large number of services and amenities to students. However, the type of accommodation in them is usually studio apartments, so the cost is usually quite high.
On the other hand there are the university residences of the Studierendenwerk Ulm. Universities in Germany don't have their own accommodations, but instead offer them through this public organization. The cost is considerably lower, although they also offer more basic infrastructure and services.
The cost of a room depends on whether it's part of a private shared apartment or a student residence. The cheapest rooms are usually those offered by the Studierendenwerk Ulm, between approximately €300 and €500, although they're also more basic. Rooms in private apartments and residences are usually slightly more expensive, but also offer more amenities and services.
Adding up accommodation, food, transportation, entertainment, and insurance, a student's monthly budget typically ranges between €950 and €1,000. However, remember that this depends greatly on each student's lifestyle and the type of accommodation chosen.
Going to Ulm as an Erasmus student is a great way to get to know German culture firsthand and practice the language on a daily basis. It's a quiet city with a great student vibe and places to enjoy. Plus, from Ulm you can easily travel to other German cities or even neighbouring countries. It's a perfect destination for studying, meeting people, and exploring Europe!

Germany belongs to Group 1 of countries with a high cost of living, and those who go to Germany from Group 2 or 3 countries are eligible for the highest EU grant. This is usually between €350 and €680 per month, but the final amount depends on each individual case, so it's a good idea to inquire carefully at your university's international office.
